New Wired Glass Offers Impact Safety
KIRKLAND, Wash. - Technical Glass Products is pleased to announce that it now offers Pilkington Pyroshield™ Plus - a new breed of wired glass that offers impact safety in addition to fire protection.
For decades, traditional wired glass has been a standard choice for fire-rated openings in schools and commercial facilities. Although a strong performer in fire situations, traditional wired glass does not resist impact well. When broken, the wires in the glass form snags that have resulted in a significant number of injuries.
Because of mounting concern over such injuries, the International Code Council (ICC) recently changed the International Building Code (IBC), requiring all glass in "hazardous" locations (such as doors and sidelites) to satisfy Consumer Product Safety Commission impact safety requirements. That change means traditional wired glass will no longer be an acceptable option in schools, athletic facilities, daycare centers, or other settings where it would be exposed to frequent human contact.
Fortunately, there is now an affordable alternative that makes an ideal substitute for traditional wired glass. New Pilkington Pyroshield™ Plus is a modified type of wired glass, formed by taking traditional wired glass and laminating it with a special interlayer to another layer of clear glass. This gives Pilkington Pyroshield™ Plus the strength to meet the Consumer Product Safety Commission's impact safety standard, CPSC 16CFR1201 (Category I).
What's more Pilkington Pyroshield™ Plus does not rely on a surface film to achieve its impact rating. There is no need to worry about the vandalism and maintenance issues associated with filmed products, making Pilkington Pyroshield™ Plus well suited for hazardous locations such as busy school corridors.
"With the code change, there has been a great demand for impact safety alternatives to traditional wired glass," stated Jerry Razwick, president of Technical Glass Products. "We are pleased to make available a cost effective solution in Pilkington Pyroshield™ Plus."
Pilkington Pyroshield™ Plus is listed with Underwriters Laboratories and carries fire ratings up to 90 minutes in doors and up to 45 minutes in other applications. It is available in either diamond or square mesh patterns, can be cut to size and is readily available for quick shipment throughout the United States and Canada.
