Fire-Rated Glass Floor System Coming Soon
TGP is proud to announce that we're adding a new product to our fire-rated glazing line beginning in 2009: A Fireframes® glass floor system. The advanced fire-rated flooring system carries a rating of two hours - the only floor system in the United States with that level of protection. It is also approved for loads up to 150 psf., can be used in interior or exterior applications, and is listed with Underwriters Laboratories (UL). Designers will be able to use the new glazed flooring system to bring daylight deep into interior spaces, and to create dramatic visual effects between different building levels. Potential applications include shopping malls, department stores, offices and high-end homes. It allows glazing in spaces that previously would have required other fire-stopping materials like concrete, and can also be used in non-fire-rated applications. The custom-built system consists of two-hour Pilkington Pyrostop™ heat barrier translucent glass combined with a tempered, laminated walking surface glass utilizing Pilkington Optiwhite™ colorless glass. The walking surface can be easily replaced in case of impact breakage. The system also allows for decorative, color frits, and sandblasted glass options. Available glass sizes are approximately 48" x 50". Look for more details in the coming months. |

AIA-Registered Daylighting Course Now Available OnlineTGP recognizes that architects and designers are increasingly returning to the use of natural light to create comfortable, energy-efficient and aesthetically pleasing spaces in commercial buildings and homes. To better support your educational needs regarding the benefits, challenges, and options for daylighting, you can now access our free course "A Bright Future: Daylighting for Tomorrow's Buildings" online at tgpamerica.com. The course is registered with the American Institute of Architects' Continuing Education System (AIA/CES) and qualifies for 1.0 Health, Safety and Welfare (HSW) learning unit hour. It consists of six video modules, a daylighting article, and a brief test. Test scores of 80 percent or higher qualify for AIA CES credit. TGP will provide participants who receive a passing score with a certificate of completion and will submit their results directly to AIA for credit. Qualified architectural firms can also still request an in-person, AIA-registered lunch-and-learn presentation from TGP on daylighting by visiting tgpamerica.com. Participants completing the in-person and online courses can earn credits for both. TGP also offers an AIA-registered class on designing with and specifying fire-rated glazing. Design professionals can complete the fire-rated course online or by requesting an in-person presentation.

TGP Introduces Pilkington Profilit™ Channel Glass in CanadaExpanding product options for Canadian design professionals, TGP now offers Pilkington Profilit channel glass in Canada. The Pilkington Profilit glazing system offers a unique alternative to traditional window glazing and glass block with its self-supporting glass channels and an extruded metal perimeter frame. The result is a wall, façade, or partition that obscures vision but allows light to pass through, making it well suited for a range of daylighting designs. Pilkington Profilit can be used in interior or exterior applications, with an overall span of up to 7 meters (23 feet). The channels can be installed either vertically or horizontally. For customer's creative purposes, the "U-shaped" cast glass channels generally do not require intermediate vertical mullions for vertical installations. Because of the shape of the system, it can achieve very tight radiuses and can be used in serpentine applications. The glass is available in a variety of colors and textures with varying translucencies. As one of the most cost-efficient glass cladding systems available, Pilkington Profilit cuts the need for artificial lighting and provides superior sound reduction (up to 42db). Distinctive Channel Glass Wall Captures Natural Light, Invites Guests into Scottsdale Luxury HotelGetting enough sunlight is usually not an issue in Arizona's Sonoran Desert. With an average of 325 days of sunshine per year, and temperatures that regularly soar above 100° F, Scottsdale, Arizona, is one of the world's premier destinations for people seeking sun and relaxation within a backdrop of luxury. To lavishly accommodate guests, Starwood Hotels & Resorts has opened its first W Hotel in Arizona. Located in the heart of the downtown Scottsdale entertainment district, the Scottsdale W Hotel and Residences stands seven stories tall and offers a spa, a restaurant, bars and luxury condominiums. Distinctive design elements are incorporated throughout, including a number of water features and an under-water porte cochere that creates a dramatic entrance.
For the project, Hornberger + Worstell Architects (San Francisco, CA) were tasked with creating a state-of-the-art hotel living room for which W Hotels are known world-wide. A traditional W Hotel living room is the center of activity containing the hotel front desk, lounge, seating areas, bar and restaurant. A design challenge that faced the project architect was creating a space that flowed well from the captivating porte cochere entry and incorporates natural light into the hotel living room, while keeping out the Arizona heat and outside distractions. "We wanted to find a contemporary looking translucent material without a metal frame to create a pattern of glazing and diffuse the light in interesting and changeable ways throughout the day and night," says Christian Low, principal and senior vice president of Hornberger + Worstell Architects. "We also wanted some transparency, but not a clear fish bowl glass effect, because we were trying to visually invite the guests into the hotel lobby living room, yet also screen the cars and activities outside in the porte cochere."
